St. Stephen‘s Cathedral
A historic place to see
The St. Stephen's Cathedral, located at Stephansplatz in Vienna, has been the cathedral since 1365 and the seat of the archbishop since 1469. It is considered a symbol of Vienna and is sometimes referred to as Austria's national sanctuary. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. The building is 109 meters long and 72 meters wide. Parts of a late Romanesque predecessor structure from the 13th century are still visible, including the western façade with the "Heidentürme" (Heathen Towers), each around 65 meters tall. The South Tower, at 136.4 meters, is the tallest, and the North Tower, left unfinished, reaches only 68 meters. The South Tower, with its remarkably shallow foundation, was the tallest freestanding structure in Europe for over 50 years. It houses 13 bells, including the Pummerin, the third-largest free-swinging bell in Europe.
