Between false chastity and sexual fantasy - In the footsteps of Josefine Mutzenbacher

Based on the memoirs of the famous Viennese prostitute, Josefine Mutzenbacher, the tour tells the story of prostitution in anecdotes with a big portion of humor. It goes back to the ancient Romans and leads us into the 21st century.

 

Who was Josefine Mutzenbacher? - The woman, who comes from a working-class family in Hernals, came into contact with the business of love at a young age and found pleasure in her eventful life. She attendedschool for 6 years and then plunged directly into working life. Mutzenbacher's experiences occurred in the second half of the 19th century and tell tales of the voluntary prostitution of the young Viennese girl. It can be disputed whether the stories about the lady really can be traced back to a single woman.

 

The tour starts at Michaelerplatz, right in front of the Hofburg. It continues through the inner city past forgotten alleys, where brothels once stood, now traditional shops opened, to the end of the tour, at the Hohe Markt.

 

 

 

The unfortunately no longer existing Café Griensteidl should not be missing on this tour! At the beginning of the 20th century, the café became the center of the Viennese Red-Light scene. Actors, archdukes, coffee house literatures such as Schnitzler (“Reigen”), as well as the ladies of the lusty trade met here and experienced lavish nights. Those are reproduced in memoirs and short stories and give joy and amusement to today's society.

 

Visitors of the tour are guided through Vienna's city center, while the tour guide cheerfully explains the origins of the terms "vögeln" and "anbandeln". The connection between the deer Bambi, known from childhood and the oldest trade in the world, may sound strange at first. However, the two stories have one thing in common. They were written by the same author.
